ADMINISTERING EYE MEDICATION
How to administer eye medication for your pet
Depending on advice from your VSS specialist, you may need to administer eye medication to your pet.
Steps to administer eye drops for pets:
Use one hand to lift your pet’s chin up and to keep your pet’s head stable.
Hold your pet’s eye open then carefully administer one drop over the surface of your pet’s eye.
Let go of your pet’s eyelids and let them blink so that the medication is dispersed across the surface of their eye.
Steps to administer eye ointment to pets:
Before beginning, it may be helpful to warm the ointment in your hand to make it easier to dispense from the tube.
Use one hand to lift your pet’s chin up and to keep your pet’s head stable.
Hold your pet’s eye open then carefully run about the size of a grain of rice over the white of your pet’s eye.
Manually blink your pet’s eye to melt the medication onto your pet’s cornea.
After administering eye medication to your pet:
Once you’ve finished giving your pet its eye medication, make sure to give it plenty of positive reinforcement, even a treat.
The more positive you make the experience, the easier the treatment will be in future.
