Specialist Small Animal Surgeon

Dr Abbie Tipler is a Small Animal Surgical Specialist at Veterinary Specialist Services.

Dr Tipler has special interest in orthopaedic surgery, spinal surgery and surgery for brachycephalic pets which includes several advanced soft tissue techniques. She founded the VSS Jindalee Brachycephalic Care Unit (BCU) in 2024.

Dr Tipler is president of the ANZCVS Small Animal Surgery Chapter. She frequently teaches, and this includes; speaking at conferences including ACVS, Science Week, Vets on Tour and AVA, lecturing at the University of Queensland, and training at courses such as the VetPrac orthopaedic workshop, several Brachycephalic surgery workshops and an AO (orthopaedic) course. She also regularly engages with the veterinary community via social media and websites to provide surgical tips for general practice veterinarians. She founded the Small Animal Surgery Discussion Page with hosts over 8000 veterinarians world-wide.

She has examined for the ANZCVS college in the topic of Small Animal Surgery several times, including being head examiner, and is a published author in several veterinary journals. 

She has world-wide training including at an orthopaedic referral practice in London, UC Davis, Bristol University and countless veterinary conferences and courses around the world (BVOA, ACVS, VOS, ANZCVS Science week etc). Her residency was undertaken with VSS, and she passed her specialist Fellowship Examinations subsequent to her training. She was in fact the only candidate in her year to pass the rigorous examinations. 

She has been actively involved in charities such as Pets in the Park, Elephants Rhinos People, Greyhound Rescue and Cantoo. She lives in Saint Lucia, Brisbane with her husband, two young children and three ragdoll cats.
