Australian (National) Vet Nurse/Technologist of the Year Winner

A huge congratulations to Kim Weir, Nursing Manager at VSS Carrara, who has won the 2024 Australian (National) Vet Nurse/Technologist of the Year Award from the Veterinary Nurses Council of Australia (VNCA). This award "honours excellence" within the veterinary profession and is a massive achievement. We are extremely proud of Kim and all of her exceptional work, both within the VSS team and the veterinary industry as a whole.

Since joining VSS in 2012, Kim has shown extraordinary dedication and leadership, marking a significant journey of growth and achievement. Her exceptional communication skills and commitment to fostering a collaborative environment have established a culture of trust and respect among her colleagues and patients.

Kim leads by example, consistently demonstrating dedication to patient care and ethical practice. Her positive attitude and solution-oriented approach to challenges inspire those around her, while her commitment to continuous learning and professional development motivates others to pursue their own growth. This has been demonstrated by Kim obtaining her Veterinary Technician Speciality in Small Animal Internal Medicine (VTS SAIM).

As the founder of the Gold Coast Animal Blood Bank, Kim has tirelessly ensured a steady supply of blood for our patients, implementing measures to prevent waste and expiration. Her innovative design and implementation of the Goodman Points Scale System addressed workload management challenges and Kim's involvement in the Peace Parade, a committee dedicated to staff mental health and wellbeing, reflects her proactive approach to preventing burnout and improving work conditions.

Kim developed comprehensive protocols in medicine, oncology and intensive care units focused on enhancing staff safety, patient outcomes and staff knowledge. Kim has mentored many staff and Certificate IV TAFE students through the hospital, and she currently mentors future VTSs.

Beyond her professional achievements, Kim has made significant contributions to the community through her work with Wild Care Australia, from 2015 to 2022, rehabilitating native wildlife and supporting local biodiversity. Her involvement in Dogs on the Green from 2014 to 2021 further highlights her commitment to raising awareness about veterinary care and supporting pet owners.

Let us celebrate Kim’s remarkable dedication, compassion, and exemplary leadership, acknowledging that this award not only honours her outstanding contributions, but also fuels her passion to continue making a transformative impact on her field and community.
